I have a confession to make. I don’t have my driver’s license and I have not driven a car since 2001. This was much easier in the past since I lived in New York City, where having a car was more of a hassle than it was worth. Then in 2005, I moved to Miami Beach, where it was like a village and I got a bike instead. I had a beautiful periwinkle beach cruiser with a wicker basket and it definitely got some love from me. For rest of the country; it’s unfathomable to not have your own set of wheels. But in South Beach, where influx of Europeans, Cubans and beautiful South Americans resided; it was readily more accepted.
Not having a car meant, no car payments, no insurance, no worry about it being stolen or worse yet, an accident. It was freeing and I was happy to co-exist with my bike. It’s really environmentally friendly to boot. (You know I have to inject that in here since it IS a green blog) According to Eric Sorenson, author of Seven Wonders for a Cool Planet,
“People and Bikes were made for each other. The bicycle is a wonder of physics. It harnesses human muscle power directly to old time marvel-the wheel-and yields a vehicle more energy efficient than any other devised, ever, by anyone. Thanks to these awesome physics, the bicycle costs pennies per mile and less than a bus fare trip. It emits no greenhouse gases, local pollutants, or engine noise. “
For the rest of the world; it’s their mode of transportation. Bicycles outnumber cars two to one worldwide, and even in progressive, developed cities, like Tokyo and Paris, bicycles are favored more than the gas guzzling, Co2 emitting autos. OK, this is the part where everyone (including my EC) will start sputtering, I NEED my car; my job is 20 miles away ect… ect. I am not telling you to get rid of your car, but try to look at the bike as more than a plaything. Start with a trip to the convenient store. With the ever increasing gas prices these days; one day; it might become a necessity.
and check out my new green friend and fellow blogger, Gavin’s post on 17 Reasons Why Bicycles Are the Most Popular Vehicle in the World Today. and the EcoWorldly has tons, I mean tons of posts on bicycles this week. I am assuming they love their bike as much as I did. (They are actually doing a cycling series. Great minds think alike.)
So dust off that old mike and get rolling. Your wallet AND your body will thank you for it.

Good for you! I managed to go 8 years with no car when I lived in a ski town in Colorado. It was sometimes hard to ride my bike especially in winter, but I saved tons of money doing it.
I am not as lucky now, where I live is more remote and the trip to the store would be impossible on a bike. But I work from home and make as few trips as possible.

Right, how I wish people will just use bikes as their means of transportation. Aside from they can save from paying gasoline, there are also health benefits.

I really wish it were possible to do something like this where I live! Public transportation is TERRIBLE, and riding a bike just isn’t safe on most of the roads. I’d love to take up biking again, it’s good for all of us.

Biking is a great form of workout and relieves stress as well.

Good for you! We try to limit our car usage but there’s times when you can’t accomplish your tasks by the use of a bicycle nor the public transportation system, which in our town is practically non-existent. We do what we can. Nice post!

Well done. When I have lived in the major cities in the world I always used public transport - Now I am in the sticks I have a bike - great exercise as well

If you have the time and the will, it’s all worth it. Just look at Amsterdam (taking off all comments about drug culture there).. it’s one of the cleanest cities in the whole of Europe. Plus one of my biggest dreams would be to ride Paris in a recreation bike.
That’s not easy, I’m one of those beautiful south americans still in their own land

Not to mention the problem of bike theft (usually by junkies) in Amsterdam, I’m happily living there without a car (biggest problem people have here is where to park the b****y vehicle) and a bike I even found in the trash!
And yes, cycling is stress relieving too.

wow, that’s harsh. didn’t know that.
I always thought that would be more dangerous here in Argentina, where I live. But here, lately there’s been what we call “La prueba de la bicileta” (http://www.lapruebadelabicicleta.com) - the bycicle test, which is supposed to prove if we could leave a bycicle unlocked in the middle of the street in the city and see if it gets snagged for a certain amount of time (20mins approx)
No bike was stolen yet, who’d have figured!

I have to admit, I don’t ride my bike as much as I should… It is FAR too hot here to do it very often… I can barely step out my door without getting dizzy! That being said, I don’t drive my car much, either. I’ve had the same tank of gas for about a month and a half now, and I probably won’t need to get more gas until at least next week! So I think I’m doing ok

Eco friendly bicycle is really an interesting idea. Bicycling is a very popular form of exercise, so its makes you more healthier.

Wow — that’s awesome! I wish I could ride my bike more often to get where I need to go.. I live in a very rural area so if I rode a bike, it would take me hours upon hours to get to work! : /

Interesting stat on bicycles versus car numbers. I live in the northeast, so I only get to use my bicycle for 5 months of the year if I’m lucky, but any time I can use the bike instead of the car, it’s helping a little. Not only the environment but exercise for me!

Gave my cars up for bikes 4 years ago and never felt better! And, you know what? You don’t have to drive them fast or far to enjoy them. Every now and then I put the equivalent to a car insurance payment in the bank, just to remind myself how good it is! My garden is feeding me, my bike is transporting me and my soul is free!

I wish I could ride a bike to work everyday, but my work is almost 30 miles away from me. I am actually extremely close to my work so that I can hopefully ride a bicycle to work or drive a very short distance.
