Rockefeller Christmas Tree

One of the old stand-bys like the Radio City Rockettes, the Rockefeller Christmas tree has always rang in the holiday season for the big apple. However, this year the 84 foot tall Norway Spruce will get an Eco-friendly make-over by switching over to LED lights. What more, the LED lights will be solar powered by panels on top of the Rockefeller center.

LED is the must have green holiday decoration this year. It’s more efficient than incandescent bulbs. According to CNN, the LED lights on the Rockefeller tree will reduce the display’s electricity consumption from 3,510 to 1,297 kilowatt hours per day. Even Ideal Bite had something nice to say.

  • Burning 10 strands of lights with 100 lights per strand, eight hours per day for a month costs $175 for incandescent bulbs vs. about $1 for LED mini-bulbs.
  • Seeing the light, not heating it. Incandescent lights give off as much as 90% of their energy as heat, leading to fire concerns. LEDs barely warm up.

The best part is that you can pick these babies up at your nearest Home Depot, or you can order The Brookstone LED Lights online. They go for about $20 a pop but will save on your electricity bill and the environment in the long run.

And when the old stand by is ready to come down; it will be cut into lumber to be used in houses built by Habitat for Humanity. This is a indeed the beginning of a jolly green holidays.
