The last time I wrote about CFL’s I didn’t have any.. ha ha.. I know bad, right? Well mostly I got the information from Wiki.. which is to say that it was more technical information but I have actually invested in these Squiggly little things that actually didn’t cost me that much money.

We went to home depot and saw a package of 4 and cost me $8. In the front of the package, it stated that I would save about $140 on Electric bills. That sold my boyfriend… and initial $8 investment to save $140 didn’t sound bad at all. So we got home and unscrewed all the regular lightbulb and put these things in.. Oh, I got 60ww.. that’s what we usually use. The lamps were fine but oh man, the overhead light was bright! No matter, we only put in two instead of three. That worked out better, whew!

Now there’s been some concern about level of Mercury, but according to Chris Baskind over at Lighter Footstep (a great resource for Eco-friendly Ideas

Intact CFL will never emit mercury. But CFLs can broken through accident or improper disposal. That makes it important to dispose of spent or damaged CFLs in a responsible manner.

There’s no need to panic if you break a CFL. Most bulbs are damaged when they’re cold, and the mercury is likely to adhere to the bulb’s debris. To be safe, ventilate the area. Using rubber or latex cloves — the kitchen variety should be fine — carefully gather up the ballast and broken glass with disposable paper towels. Wipe the floor carefully with more paper toweling, then double bag everything in Ziploc bags. Dispose as hazardous waste.

On another note, I had some hard time deciding what to do with the main domain of JollyGreenGirl.Com. At first it was a photoblog but that got scratched…then it went through several morphs until I just decided to do some features about sustainable living. I just did an article, Finding the Perfect Eco-friendly Engagement Ring, if you want to check it out.
