EC and I decided to do some shopping at Wal-Mart because unfortunately, there isn’t that many Eco-friendly resources in the area we live in. Of course, before we headed in, I went into this diatribe about how Wal-Mart is an evil corporation and we really shouldn’t be shopping here. EC, with his usual patience (but which is wearing thin; I can tell) encouraged me by promising that this is the last time we are shopping here. I reluctantly went inside the store. By now, I am feeling like a total fraud. How can I write about the Environment and shop at Wal-Mart? We strolled to the garden section because I wanted to get some more plants for the house, and what I found was very encouraging.
First, I found Eco-friendly Plants that are packaged in peatpots and they are 100 percent biodegradable. I bought Sweet Bell Pepper which we named Bonnie and Rosemary we named Clyde (I have this thing where I like to name my plants). We needed to find some potting soil and what I found next excited me beyond belief! Couple of weeks ago, I did a post on TerraCycle, an Eco-friendly plant food that was made out of worm poop and packaged in recycled plastic containers. It was there, right there at Wal-Mart. I, of course, got one for myself. I was ecstatic at this point.
Then it was food shopping time. We walked around the store and got as much Organic products as we could. Even Kraft Mac and Cheese was Organic. Of course, there could always be more. But I was happy that at least there was some selection to choose from. We needed butter and so we stopped at the butter aisle. There was the Horizon Organic butter that cost four dollars and the regular brand that cost only two. I asked EC, if we could get that. Before he could say a word, an older couple walks up. The woman exclaims, “Oh, the Organic butter is on sale, it’s usually five dollars!” and She grabs the butter. The man had the same expression that EC had on his face. Without a word, I picked up my organic butter and plopped it in the cart.
When I got home, I planted my Ecologically minded Veggies and herb in my Ecologically minded soil. I think it’s the best day I had in Scranton thus yet.

Hi—Susie:
I recently blogged about the preserve toothbrush, which is now available at Walmart. You know i was recently reading about how walmart is (trying) to clean up its act abit, and has like 10 eco-centric walmart stores in beta. They have along wat to go with their efficiencies, but just the fact that they are seriously planning and considering earth-friendly spaces does matter. Let’s face it, with their massive reach and sheer market penetration (or saturation) they cannot be ignored. Since moving to a small town (from Chicago), Walmart is king where i live. Prior to moving where i now live, i never had visited a Walmart. Getting back to the toothbrush, the manufacturer (recycline) even wrote a letter to customers on their website, because it caused a bit of an uproar, that they would choose Walmart as a distributor. I plan to get one, next time i visit WallyWorld. Well i think that was long enough of a ramble, lol. See ya.

Hello Missy.. I can’t wait for your new veggie blog. I also moved from a city to a small town and feel you exactly! That’s cool about the toothbrush. I might have to look into that. It really does make me happy that a big name like Wal-Mart is trying because although there are wealth of resources in big cities like Chicago and New York.. almost everyone shops at Walmart in the rest of the country and they need the resources to Eco-friendly products too

I’ve read in several different places, that Walmart is trying to get it’s eco-act together. But that’s Walmart. Remember that just because a food product says “organic” doesn’t necessarily mean what you think it does. Have you actually read the USDA guidelines for
“organic” labeling? There has been a lot of controversy over whether the guidelines were loosened up specifically so that big companies like Kraft would fit within the qualifications. So, yeah, it’s a great thing that people are trying to go green, but remember that when it looks to good to be true, it just might be.

Well there is such thing called Certified Organic and that is regulated by USDA and there’s Organic grown and all the other labels. I do not know where Kraft fits in to all those but there are some Organic products I have tried and used for years and know the brand and it was offered at Wal-Mart. Would I normally shop there? No but I don’t live in New York anymore so I don’t have much of a choice at the moment. I have been buying some things online but sometimes we need thing like now (food would fall into that catagory) I am trying my best with what I have been given at the moment. Thanks for your input. I do believe that it’s a marketing scheme also but partially organic is better than no organic at all

Walmart is only “greening” up its act as much as it needs to keep its profit share up. Constant bad news makes investors skittish. That’s great that they have some environmentally friendly and organic products available. However, it doesn’t take away from the fact that they continue to treat their employees like compost!

Hey Travel Betty, thanks for stopping by… I wish I could go into unfair wage practices from Corporate America. I have beef with my boyfriend’s current company that is overworking everyone and not compensating them for it. They moved to a rural area so they could avoid being unionized and I absolutely despise the way they are treating their employees.. but this is a sad fact of life. The best thing to do is to work for yourself. However, My main cause is the Environment but, perhaps this is something you might be a cause you can blog about. I would totally support you!
