EC and I were sitting on the couch enjoying a homemade dinner first time in months since we had Jolly Green Baby, Layla. EC leaned back thoughtfully and said, “Having a baby is…. ” A long pause. “really demanding.”(This is coming from someone who held down four jobs before the baby was born) And it is. Any new parents, as well as those who have been through it, will know this. What’s even harder is trying to still live a sustainable life and try to take care of a newborn.
When you are so tired that you just can’t do one thing more. Turning off that power strip which literally takes a second… is like climbing Mount Everest. Forget about eating Organic anything. Fast food and TV dinners were our source of eating. I watched guiltily the fast food wrappers piled up on my coffee table; wondering.. can I still call myself an environmentalist? Then there was the excursion to the grocery store. We forgot the reusable grocery bags… yet again.
“I thought you grabbed them”
“I thought you did…” (Sigh)
This has started to make me wonder, Am I green enough?
Of course, we would like to think that when you become parents, you WILL care more about the Earth.. Because you have to leave the planet in better shape for your children and hopefully grandchildren that will follow. How can we teach responsibility if we don’t take care of the things that actually sustain us? But that’s for another day. Today, I am just happy that I bought the Marcel Recycled Toilet Paper (although it’s like sandpaper) Seventh Generation Dishwashing Soap, Seventh Generation Baby Wipes, and this time… Neither one of us forgot the Envirosax bags.
Even if I am holding on by the thread.. I am still green baby… all green.

I totally agree that being green while you have a newborn is tough. Hang in there! The fast food will make you even more tired. Are you using cloth diapers? If not, you should. It is easier than ever. It makes a HUGE difference in your “greenness”.

Having a baby, especially if it’s a new born is really different. It makes a big difference in your life. But, I’m sure you can still manage your time especially in your “green” activities.

I sooo understand what you mean. My son is 10 weeks old, and despite my efforts of going green, it’s really hard with an newborn. I am ashamed to say that I am not doing the cloth diapers (I have prefolds and covers) as much as I intended, especially at night. He’s a pretty high-needs baby and it’s takes all my efforts just to comfort and care for him, let alone trying to do extra loads of laundry. I intend to do all cloth once he’s a little older, but until then I am still using green cleaners and trying to remember the shopping bags!
