“Be the Change You Want to See in The World” Mahatma Gandhi

I just wanted to talk about how I started my journey to become an Environmentalist and why I created a blog about Eco-friendly living. I truly can’t say I am one of those people who always cared about the Environment and started protesting against Animal Rights when I was in high school. In-fact, I knew nothing or cared about the Environment. I was probably the furthest from the Green person you would ever meet. It all happened accidentally; hence the Accidental Environmentalist. It was all a gradual change that happened by living in New York City and getting into Yoga that has led me down the path of becoming more Environmentally Conscious.

Believe it or not.. New York can be a very Green Place… There is a mandatory recycling program that’s in the five boroughs.. and that’s how I started recycling.. at first it was a chore sorting things out but then I decided that it was a good thing. Then I met few friends and roommates who were vegetarians or into organic stuff so I started going to vegetarian restaurants and I decided that I really liked it.. and Organic products are naturally grown without hormone and antibiotics so I started to purchase Organic products. New York City has the best resources for Organic lifestyle. They have Whole Foods that’s cropping up all over the place as well as smaller Organic markets located in almost every neighborhood.. Some more than others but my favorite is the Union Square Market where the farmers in the local region come to sell their products. Most are Organic and they are fabulous. It’s so nice to get up in the morning and browse through the market with some Chai tea in your hand.

As I became more into my yoga practice. I started to become more aware of the practice of “Ahimsa” which means non-violence in Sanskrit. I noticed that almost everything was made of leather, fur and suede.. and I decided to cut down on buying products made of these. I noticed that a lot of companies still practice animal testing despite the fact that there were other alternatives. So I started looking at labels and slowly changed how I shopped. It was a gradual process that I barely noticed but here I am. I am not perfect. I did splurge on two leather bags last year and despite my best efforts; I could not go vegetarian.. but I am trying and that’s a good thing.

I got the Idea for a green blog after I subscribed to Ideal Bites. I thought to myself. Hey, being green doesn’t mean I have to all serious and crunchy granola. I think that’s what scares most people away.. They see the enormity of the problem and think they have to make drastic lifestyle changes. I am here to say.. do couple of things that doesn’t inconvenience you but helps out the planet. If we all approach with this attitude; even small changes can make a huge difference. Hence the idea for Jolly Green Girl was born. I am also a student studying Biology after taking an extended break from school; a former art student and artist; freelance writer for Associated Content, and newly appointed Accidental Environmentalist.

When I am not updating my blog or in class, I like to

  • travel
  • play with my dog Abby
  • watch the telly with EC (the biggest supporter of the Accidental Environmentalist)
  • yoga
  • art
  • photography
  • and I also love to eat.. I am a total foodie.
